Four people are confirmed dead after being knocked by a speeding vehicle on the Soroti-Lira highway on Sunday evening.

The accident occurred at Abutadi village, Amach Sub County in Lira district, when a Toyota Corona registration number UAG 156C hit a motorcycle number UDJ 617X, which was carrying four people.

The car was reportedly being driven by Lira district Assistant Engineer Francis Ariong.

Those killed instantly include Denis Ayoo the motorcycle rider, his wife Margret Okot, and a five month old daughter identified as Agweng Mariam instantly.

The fourth person identified as Acen Simpo 35, died on her way to Lira regional referral hospital 30 minutes later.

Jackson Okello, an eyewitness says the motorcycle came from a feeder road and entered the highway.

Lira district traffic offer Juvenile Rwabakama says the deceased were members of one family and that they were heading for burial of their relative within the same village.

Ariong, who was briefly held at Lira Central Police Station but later released on police bond, declined to talk to the URN reporter in the area but asked his colleague, Moris Adem to speak on his behalf. Adem said the Engineer has accepted to foot the burial expences as negotiations on compensation go on.

According to Rwabakama, the engineer was coming from Soroti heading to Lira town and when he reached the T- junction at Abutadi village, a motorcycle came from the feeder road and joined the main road without stopping.

//Cue in: “It came from the feeder………….
Cue out:….crashing the motor cycle rider.”

Rwabakama says at least six people have died in various road accidents within Lira in the last two weeks.
