The 2012 Uganda Open Tennis event enters the quarter final stage for the men’s singles on Wednesday at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium.
The event sponsored by Uganda Breweries Limited through their Castle Lite brand, has had five Rwandans make it to the last eight, while only three Ugandans David Oringa, Herbert Buyinza and John Otiti are through.
In the games played on Tuesday, top seed and tournament favourite Claude Jean Gasigwa beat Robert Kwagala 6-1, 6-3, while up-coming local star David Oringa, who faces Gasigwa on Wednesday, ejected Rwanda’s John Muganeza 6-2, 6-0. Speaking to URN reporter after the game, Oringa said he is now focused on the quarter finals.
Buyinza also had an easy win over Geoffrey Zziwa whom he dispatched 6-4, 6-1 in one of the pre-quarter final games, while Rwanda’s Mike Uwizeyimana had to dig deep to eliminate Jonathan Ssebanja, who features for Uganda’s national side, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0.
Uwizeyimana told URN that he is happy with the way the event is getting on and added that he thinks he has a chance against a fellow countryman Olivier Nkunda in the quarters.
