Five people including four police officers are confirmed dead and one seriously injured in a road accident on Kampala-Entebbe road on Monday morning.
Three of the police officers and a victim of a mob action who was being rushed to Entebbe Hospital, died on the spot when a Highway Integrated Patrol pickup truck registration number UP 1295 had a head-on collision with a tipper lorry registration number UAM 897Q.
According to Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Ibn Ssenkumbi, the accident occurred shortly after 6am at Kitubulu near Sese Gateway Beach. He says the patrol team was coming from Lyamutundwe near Nkumba, where they had been called after an unidentified person was attacked by a mob. Ssenkumbi says the police truck from the direction of Kampala was trying to overtake another vehicle and collided head-on with the tipper lorry.
Those who died on the spot have been identified as Corporal Godfrey Bogere, who was the commander of the police team, Moses Daloki, who was driving the pickup truck and Constable Julius Balazawe, a crew member. The mob action victim also died on the spot.
Constable Fred Mwekwasize, another victim of the accident, died shortly after being rushed to Entebbe hospital. The injured officer has been identified as George Kilama, who has been transferred from Entebbe Hospital to Mulago where he is expected to under an operation.
Ssenkumbi says the driver and turn boy of the tipper, which was carrying sand, ran away after the accident.
