There was drama in Bugembe town council on Thursday afternoon after residents stormed the town council headquarters to block the budget reading to protest a decision by the speaker to invite councilors accused of stealing iron sheets. The implicated councilors include Asuman Egonga, Juma Sozzi, Majid Kawanguzi and Arthur Kakaire.

They were arrested recently following the disappearance of 600 iron sheets from the council stores and released on police bond. Some of the stolen iron sheets meant to cover Bugembe central market, were recovered by police from the home of the councilors. Despite the charges against the suspects, the speaker Bugembe town council Charles Tatware invited them for the budget reading drawing angry reactions from residents.

Armed with machetes, sticks and stones, the residents stormed Bugembe Town Council accusing the speaker of inviting criminals to the council. They gathered at the council main gate, and raised alarm as they waited for the implicated councilor to walk out the council. Steven Wante, Bugembe town council LC III chairman pleaded with the residents to calm down in vain.

Simon Waiswa, one of the angry residents told Wante that they would condone such corrupt tendencies and demanded that the councilors be thrown out of the council immediately. As a result, Charles Tatware, the Bugembe town council speaker adjourned the budget reading to later today.
