Three Held over Brutal Mosque Attack

Lira Police is holding three men accused of masterminding a brutal attack on worshipers at Lira main Mosque on Friday last week. The suspects are Isha Mohammad, Rashid Adola and Shaban Abwong. Joseph Kirabo, the District Criminal Investigations Officer says that the suspects are being at Lira Central police station for causing grievous bodily harm.


Kirabo says that the suspects are believed to have directly participated in the brutal attack on members loyal to Sheikh Yusuf Balinda, the former Kadhi Lira district. He says that police is still hunting for seven other suspects connected to the mosque attack. The suspects were picked up after about ten youths belonging to a rival group who was armed with machetes raided Lira main mosque during Friday and hacked four people.


The injured are Ibrahim Ikoyo, Abdhala Waibi, Yasin Arafat and Juma Otim. They are nursing machete wounds at Ronam Clinic in Lira town. Ibrahim Okello, Erute County Sheikh who was also participating in the prayer said the group sneaked into the Mosque in small groups with machetes tacked in their Kanzus and pounced on their victims while praying.
