Kampala Capital City Authority—KCCA is to enforce mandatory installation of lightning conductors in city schools.
Ann Galiwango, the KCCA director for education told Uganda Radio Network that the authority plans to spend 200 million shillings for the installation of the conductors in all the government aided schools in the city.
She says the money shall also be a basis for KCCA to move towards enforcing the mandatory installation of lightning conductors in all schools in Kampala. According to Galiwango, even private schools should comply with the measure to protect the children’s lives.

Beatrice Mutasigwa, the headmistress Buganda Road primary school, is hopeful that the policy would safeguard the children’s safety.
Mutasigwa says Buganda Road Primary School has seven conductors on the seven blocks adding that in case of KCCA additional facilitation each block shall be boosted with a second conductor.
Patrick Kaboyo, the executive director Coalition of Uganda Private School Teachers Association, says the children are the greatest source of revenue for the private schools and that the children’s lives should be given the first priority.
Kaboyo also wants KCCA to include ownership of a play ground as one of the conditions for registering a private school.
Last year, more than 50 people were killed and hundreds others injured by lightning strikes in different parts of the country. In One incident on June 29, 2011, at least 19 pupils died after their school was struck in Runyaanya in Kiryandongo district.
