Two of the officials have been identified as Richard Onyango, the Principle Community Development Officer and Wilson Ochira, the acting Community Development Officer.
Four officials of Gulu district local government have been arrested for embezzling millions of shillings meant to fund development activities in the district. Two of the officials have been identified as Richard Onyango, the Principle Community Development Officer and Wilson Ochira, the acting Community Development Officer.
The identities of the two others officials have not yet been disclosed by police. The four officials were picked up by Police on Tuesday afternoon. They are accused of embezzling unspecified amount of money meant for projects under the Community Driven Development-CDC.
Denis Odoch, the Gulu District Police Commander confirmed the arrest of the official to URN last evening but declined to divulge details for fear of jeopardizing investigations. Ojara Mapinduzi, the Gulu LC V chairman who attended who attended a closed door meeting between police, district leaders and the implicated officials says that the arrested officials mismanaged money meant for community driven projects.
He says that the officials who were in charge of the project forged documents and opened bank accounts where they diverted money meant for the projects. Ojara says that the officials created fictitious community projects with names similar to those that were meant to benefit from the funds.
He says that during the meeting police managed to recover six million shillings from the two bank accounts. Ojara says police is now trying to establish the extent of the fraud. The arrest of the four paralyzed activities as Gulu Municipal council as fear of possible arrest gripped the workers. The suspects were by last evening being held at Gulu Central Police Station.
