Fire has gutted the laboratory of Moyo secondary school destroying equipment worth millions of shillings. It broke out in the wee hours of Tuesday morning. David Dima, head teacher Moyo Secondary School says they have not established what could have started the fire, but suspect that it could have been caused by a short circuit. Dima says that the fire was first noticed by students who saw a cloud of huge smoke in the laboratory but their efforts to put it out were futile.
He says that some of items that were destroyed in the fire include chemicals, apparatus and text books worth 10 million shillings. He describes the incident as a disaster for the school which is likely to affect the performance of students in their final examinations. Dima says that the school is faced with an uphill task to conduct practical examinations for candidates classes as the end of term examinations are scheduled to kick off on July 9.
He has appealed to government and district authorities to come to the rescue of his school. In the meantime, Dima says they have resolved to call for an emergence board of governors meeting to see how best to handle the crisis. Josephine Angucia, the north western police spokesperson says that they have launched investigations to establish the cause of the fire. Michael Mali, Moyo District Police Commander says that they are waiting for the police investigations report before they can intervene to arrest the situation.
