St. Aloysius College Nyapea in Zombo district has been closed following a violent strike by students on Tuesday night. The students rampaged over alleged maladministration, nepotism and poor meals. The decision to close the school was reached on Wednesday in a crisis meeting between school administrators, district officials and border of directors.
The meeting resolved that all students be sent home to pave way for proper investigations into the strike that led to the destruction of school properties including computers, window panes and vital documents amongst others. John Bosco Opio, the head teacher St. Aloysius College says that A ‘Level students will resume studies after one week, while their O’Level counterparts will return in two weeks time.
He says that the students are expected to report with 66,000 shilling each for repairing the vandalized school properties.
He says both the parents and members of school board of governor were shocked with the level of destruction at the school. Josephine Angucia, the northwestern police spokesperson says the students who lead strike were denied meal coupons because of failure to complete fees.
She explains that police has maintained presence at the school until when the students report back. Angucia says Nyapea College which was once amongst the best schools in the region has drastically dropped because of endless strikes. This is the second school in Arua to be closed as a result of strike over the past few months. St. Joseph’s College – Ombaci was also closed recently following a violent students strike.
