Four local leaders in Lwengo district including two members of parliament have been assaulted by suspected supporters of John Alintuma Nsambu, the Bukoto South NRM MP candidate. They are Gertrude Nakabira Lubega, the Lwengo district Woman Member of parliament, Isaac Ssejoba Mayanja, Bukoto Midwest MP, Joseph Kasagga, the LC III Vice chairperson of Kiseka Sub county and the Ndagwe sub county LC V councilor Kabugo Mugendawala.
The nasty incident occurred on Sunday at Sseke secondary school during a campaign rally attended by President Yoweri Museveni to drum up support for Alintuma Nsambu, ahead of the Thursday by-elections. The four leaders were assaulted when they turned up a camapign rally at Sseke secondary school on the invitation of President Yoweri Museveni.
The group recently openly declared support for Mathias Nsubuga, the DP candidate instead of their NRM party candidate John Alintuma Nsambu. As a result, Museveni invited them for a meeting to convince them to withdraw their support for Nsubuga and back Nsambu. But, a mob believed to be comprised of Nsambu’s supporters pounced on the leaders and beat them seriously causing bodily injuries. It took the intervention of the Presidential Guard Brigade soldiers to rescue the leaders from the mob that also wanted to set their vehicles a blaze.
Gertrude Nakabira, the Lwengo district Woman MP explains that the mob stopped her at the main gate of Sseke secondary arguing that she does not support Nsambu. She says that her explanation that she had come to attend the rally on the invitation of President Yoweri Museveni, fell on deaf ears. She says that the group led by Lawrence Byakatunda pulled her out of her car and started landing several blows on her.
// Cue in: “There is a short man……
Cue out: “….heavenly leader.”//
Isaac Ssejoba, the Bukoto Midwest MP has vowed not to campaign for Nsambu saying that he does not deserve to be a leader. He has asked the NRM leadership to punish Nsambu for hiring thugs with intentions of harming them yet the party does not entertain hooliganism.
// Cue in: “Unfortunately…….”
Cue out: “……..this will be very sad.”//
Kabugo Mugendawala, the other victim says that he was attacked by NRM supporters dressed in the party t-shirts accusing him of hypocrisy. Mugendawala says that he is ready to leave NRM in favor of the Kabaka of Buganda. But Alintuma Nsambu has denied accusations of hiring the mob to attack NRM leaders opposed to his candidature.
In his address, President Yoweri Museveni, NRM party chairman condemned the attack on the leaders and promised to investigate the matter. Jonathan Baroza, the Lwengo DPC says that he is not aware of the attack but has promised to investigate the incident. Cases of campaign violence in the Bukoto South by election have been on the rise as the by elections draw closers. On Friday six DP supporters were also attacked and injured in Kiwangala trading center.
