In an effort to control illegal immigrants and improve on border security, the Directorate of Immigration and Citizenship Control has gazetted 16 more border points. The border points were gazetted on May 25th this year bringing the number of Uganda’s entry and exit points to 40.

The Immigration directorate has in the past been on the spot for failing to control the entry and exit of illegal immigrants which is pausing a security risk especially in regard to terrorism.
Section 82 of the Uganda Citizenship and Immigration Control Act, empowers the Minister of Internal Affairs to designate exit and entry point points.
Among the new border points include Afugi on Adjumani – Moyo road, Amudat located along Alakas road in Amudat district, Bugango in Isingiro district, and Busunga and Ntoroko in Bundibugyo district.
Other border points were opened at Butiaba on Lake Albert in Buliisa district, Butogota along the Butogota – Kashenshero road in Kanungu district, Kamwezi-Kabira road in Kabale district, and Kayanja in Ntoroko district.
Kasese airfield has also been gazetted as a border point in Kasese district. There is also Kazinga channel in Kasese district, Kisinga border in Rubirizi district and Nasal border in Moroto district.
Sebagoro, Tonya and Wanseko on Lake Albert in Buliisa district are the other border points gazetted.
Eunice Kisembo, spokesperson of the Directorate of Immigration and Citizenship Control, says the new areas would deal with the problems that for long have been associated with the porous nature of Uganda’s borders.

Kisembo described the opening of the border points as an improvement in service delivery that has taken services nearer to the people. She says they have strengthened border points in the Albertine area where there are 77 landing sites. She urged people entering or exiting the country to go through proper border points.

The directorate has also gazetted all the already existing border points saying they were not sure they had been gazetted in the past.
