Land grabbers have beaten an elderly woman to death and injured her husband critically in Butaleja district. 60-year-old Tolofaina Hasaba, a resident of Bugangu village in Busabi Sub County was murdered on Wednesday afternoon after a gang of land grabbers attacked her and her husband Lawrence Hasaba.
The attackers who were reportedly armed with pangs, stones, sticks and spears descended on the victims when they found them preparing their garden in Bugangu village. Hasaba is currently battling for his life at Busolwe Hospital where he was rushed for treatment. Richard Gulume, Butaleja Resident District Commissioner says that the family has had a long standing wrangle of over an 86 acre piece of land.
A letter dated 2nd March 1970 from the office of the area local leaders indicates that the land in question belongs to Lawrence Hasaba, the deceased’s husband. Hasaba has been hiring out the land to local to cultivate their crops.
Thomas Kamugisha, the Butaleja District Police Commander says that police has launched a hunt for the suspects who are still at large. He however declined to identify them for fear of jeopardizing investigation. He said police have been deployed in the area to stop any possible revenge attack.
