Lugazi Rovers got to a bad start on Friday night with a loss to Saudi Arabia in the 2012 Middle East Baseball tournament in Kutno, Poland. Against what was thought to be Uganda's toughest opponent, Saudi Arabia, Uganda entered the top of the 6th inning leading 1-0 after scoring a run in the bottom of the 5th inning.
Paul Kateregga, the team manager Lugazi Rovers told URN that unfortunately for Uganda, Saudi Arabia in the top of the 6th inning got a solid single and a home run to win the game 2-1. The game featured several great plays and double plays by both teams. It was a very well played game by both teams. Kateregga, also an official of the Uganda Little League (ULL) told URN today that that although the youngsters lost the first game, they are in good spirits and ready to face UAE later tonight. Kateregga says that many of their players are not very exposed internationally but are rearing to go.
The tournament that runs July 13-17 with youngsters aged 11-12 battling has attracted Uganda, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE and Qatar. In the other games played yesterday Qatar beat UAE 5-3, while Kuwait humbled Saudi Arabia 12-10. It is Lugazi Rovers’ first time to feature in this tournament. Uganda’s Rev. John team last year won the championship in Kutno. After the game with Saudi Arabia, the Lugazi Rovers team will face UAE tomorrow and Qatar on Sunday.
