Police in Tororo have arrested a 44 year-old man for allegedly defiling and impregnating his 17year-old niece.
The suspect, Idiye Karoli, a resident of Komolo village in Mella sub county, Tororo district operates a boda boda business in the border town of Malaba. He is reportedly married with three wives.
The victim, whose name has been withheld because she is a minor, is a senior one student of St. Mary’s Secondary School in Amoni parish, Mella Sub County in Tororo County. She is two months pregnant.
The two were picked from their hide out behind Malaba Integrated Primary school by angry clansmen on Sunday and handed over to Mella Police.
During interrogation by the police, Idiye denied committing the offence. He claimed that he was only helping the runaway niece to get transport to return to her mother’s village in Kirewa after discovering she was pregnant.
The girl had been in the care of another uncle called Okodoi Patrick who picked her from her home village in Kirewa in Budama North to come and study in Mella.
Idiye’s claims of innocence were however contradicted by the girl who claimed her uncle had forced himself on her several times. She said she had sexual intercourse with her uncle because he promised to fund her education until she attained a degree.
She made the revelations on Tuesday at Tororo Central Police Station.
Milton Birungi, the Criminal Investigations Officer at Tororo Central Police Station, confirmed the arrest of Idiye. He added that the case is still registered under Mella Police post reference number CRB 201/2012.
Birungi said charges of aggravated defilement will be brought up against Idiye.
