The Inspector General of Police Lt. General Kale Kayihura joined other officers and men on Saturday to launch the John Akii Bua Award.

The award is meant to honour the late Akii Bua, a former police officer who stunned the world by winning a gold medal at the Munich Olympics in September 1972.

Andrew Sorowen, the Director Special Duties in Uganda Police, said the Award is targeted at helping youngsters aged 13-18 years with a passion for sports but who find difficulty in accessing education or better sports facilities and technical help.

As part of the activities to inaugurate the award, a run is underway from Emin Pasha Hotel in Nakasero to the Kololo Independence ground.

Sorowen says even after his death in 1997, the late Senior Superintendant of Police Akii Bua has remained a sports icon because of the gold medal victory where he set the world record at the Olympics 400m hurdles.
