A Keep Kabale Clean Campaign has run into unexpected resistance with residents refusing to take part in it. The residents claim that the keeping the town clean is the responsibility of the Municipal council.

The campaign, which was launched on Thursday at Kabale Municipal main stadium after a clean up of the municipality’s streets, saw the participation of different corporate institutions, the police, prisoners, and the army.

The campaign was initiated by the municipal authorities in conjunction with Bishop Barham University but has failed to have a lasting impact as it is done once a year.

The Thursday campaign was led by Kabale municipality town clerk Augustine Bujara and LC 5 chairperson Patrick Besigye Keihwa. The officials participated in the unblocking of drainage channels and collected rubbish which was littering the streets.

Dwellers and business people were however unimpressed with the efforts. Medard Turyahabwe, a resident of Kabale Municipality, says that the municipality is trying to shun its responsibilities.

He wondered why the municipality which receives a lot of money from traders and the owners of the buildings does not use it to keep the municipality clean.

Polly Kamugisha, another resident, says that he refused to participate in the campaign simply because it is poorly designed.

He says that cleaning the streets and opening the drainage once in a year is almost useless as Kabale has for long been known as one of the dirtiest towns in the country where the authorities do not bother to put things right .

Andrew Baija, the municipality health inspector, however called upon residents to join hands with the authorities to keep their town clean or risk being compelled to participate.
