Four people have been shot dead in an attack on Muhokye Police station in Kasese district. They deceased were shot this morning after more than 60 Bakonjo clansmen from the slopes of Rwenzori Mountains raided Muhokya Sub County and tried to hoist the flag of Rwenzururu Kingdom. It is alleged that when the Bakonjo, who were armed with spears, bows, arrows and machetes arrived at Muhokya Sub County, they were blocked by police from hoisting the Rwenzururu Kingdom flag.
The group then marched to Muhokya police station, which is located around the sub county headquarters and disarmed a cop only identified as Ssemakule and shot him to death. Police opened fire shooting three Bakonjo men to death as the rest of group flee for dear life. Muhokya Sub County is home to the recently enthroned Busongora King Rwigi IV Agutamba Rutakirwa Kabumba. Lt Milton Odongo, the Resident District Commissioner Kasese describes the attack as an act of rebellion.
He says the district security committee will follow up on the perpetrators of the attack to face the strong arm of the law. Dura Mawa Muhindo, the Kasese LC V chairman blames the opposition FDC for inciting the attack to intimidate voters in the area ahead of the district Woman by-election.
Mawa however, could not explain the role of FDC in the botched raid. FDC officials in Kasese have denied their involved in the attack and instead blamed the ruling NRM party of causing a rebel scare in the area to influence the outcomes of the polls. Tension has been mounting in Kasese since July 1, when the Basongora crowned Rwigi IV Agutamba Rutakirwa Kabumba as their cultural leader.
