Security officials have revealed that the men, who raided Muhokya police station, were targeting the home of the Basongora cultural leader. This morning at about 6am, more than sixty men armed with spears, arrows, machetes and a gun attacked Muhokya police station. They stabbed to death a cop only identified as Semakula and Levy Sande, the officer in charge of Muhokye Police Station who is admitted at Kilembe Hospital in critical condition.
As a result, police opened fire killing three of the attackers forcing the remaining group to flee for dear life. Lt Milton Odongo, the Kasese Resident District Commissioner says that men targeted the police station with intention of disarming the cops before heading to the home of Rwigi IV Agutamba Rutakirwa Kabumba, the Busongora cultural leader, which is 300 meters away.
Odongo’s revelations came after security officials interrogated the wife of one of the dead men. The unidentified woman had gone to the police station to identify the body of her husband. By 3:00p.m, the bodies of the men were still lying at the compound of the police. The men had tied strings around their heads and wrists and were dressed in blue jackets and black jeans.
Odongo says that one of those killed was identified by residents of Muhokya trading centre, as one of the men who stole the flag and cultural drum of the Basongora leader early this month. Dan Bwambale, a policeman at Muhokya Police Station, told Uganda Radio Network that the men, who were speaking Swahili and Rukonzo, stormed the police station demanding to see the LC3 chairperson.
However one of the policemen became suspicious and tried to pick his gun, but one of the men stabbed him and took away his gun. The men then started firing randomly as they were heading towards Rutakirwa’s home, but were repulsed by the cops who shot three of them to death. The other group managed to escape with three guns.
Meanwhile security at Muhokya has been beefed up. Our report saw several policemen and UPDF soldiers patrolling the trading centre this afternoon. More than six police officers have also been deployed at the home of Rutakirwa. David Nguru, the Spokesperson Rwenzururu Kingdom says the kingdom is carrying is also carrying investigations to establish if the dead men were Bakonzo. .
