A top official in the office of the Administrator General has been arrested for allegedly receiving a bribe of one million shillings as an inducement to release 2.8 million shillings belonging to a beneficiary.
Aggrey Wakubi was arrested on Friday by detectives attached to the Inspectorate of Government while he received the bribe from beneficiary whose name is withheld due to security reasons.
Munira Ali, the spokesperson of the Inspectorate confirmed the arrest before saying Wakubi stands to be charged in court today with soliciting and receiving a bribe.
She added that Wakubi spent the weekend at Central Police Station in Kampala since it was too late on Friday to arraign him in court.
The Administrator-General's office protects the interests of minors, beneficiaries and creditors of the estates that the law requires.
Though the suspect was arrested by the IGG, he will be prosecuted by the DPP since the Inspectorate of Government cannot prosecute following a recent freeze by the Constitutional Court for not being fully constituted.
According to Munira, the suspect was arrested following a tip off by a frustrated beneficiary.
She said the beneficiary confided in them after the official frustrated him by demanding for a bribe in exchange to release 2.8 million belonging to his deceased relative.
Munira said when the beneficiary raised the complaint with the Inspectorate, they organized their detectives who waylaid Wakubi and arrested him as he received the bribe.
Wakubi’s arrest is just one of many such cases at the office of the Administrator General as so many complaints are raised against the officials who are accused of frustrating the would be beneficiaries by demanding for bribes in exchange of their services.
