More than 100 people in Angal parish in Kango Sub County of Zombo district are in the cold after their houses were gutted by a mysterious fire on Sunday. The fire started in 3 homesteads burning several grass thatched huts before spreading to other homesteads. The affected residents are now pitch camped under tree shades, church compounds and schools.
Jimmy Okonga, the LC 3 chairperson Kango Sub County says that the fire reduced the entire household property of the victims into ash within a very short time. He says that the fire victims are stranded as most of the residents have shied away from hosting them for fear of their houses burning.
Okonga suspects that the fire should have been started deliberately saying that before the fire broke out UGX 8 million disappeared from the village saving group without any trace. He explains after failing to trace for the money they threatened to hire a witchdoctor to trace for it, but only saw houses burning in the village.
Rasul Aluma, the Zombo RDC who visited Angal parish to assess the situation says the affected families are in dire need of humanitarian support. He appeals to the disaster preparedness ministry and other humanitarian organizations such as Redcross to intervene and help the affected residents.
Aluma warns that if the affected families continue to live under the current situation there is a likely outbreak of diseases such as Cholera. Bosco Komakech, whose house was burnt says that he is not sure how his family will survive after losing his household property and shillings 2 million in the fire.
Komakech says that he was planning to use the money to buy tobacco in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He advises the local authorities to find the suspected arsonist and make him pay for the damage he has caused to the residents.
