Four people died on spot in an accident that occurred yesterday at Kiborogota, 13 kms from Rukungiri along Rukungiri- Ntungamo road at around 2:00 pm on Friday afternoon. A fifth person died shortly after reaching hospital. Among the injured is Rubabo Woman Member of Parliament, Hon Paula Turahikayo.
Turyahikayo was traveling in a government vehicle registration number UG 0230K. She sustained serious injuries and was rushed with the other victims to Nyakibale hospital and admitted into intensive care unit.
However, she was later airlifted in an army helicopter for further treatment in Kampala with other three victims.
Other vehicles involved in the accident were a Toyota Corolla registration number UAF 600V and a Carib UAL 539Q.
The dead were identified as Muhumuza Zubair ,30, from Kabingo Kebisoni sub-county , Sanyu Alex Saasi from Kebisoni town and Kamusiime Prisca, a primary teacher at Kabingo primary school and Mutebeyi Joshua a resident of Insingiro. The fifth victim is yet to be identified.
The Rukungiri district Police commander, Ruhunde Christopher, confirmed the accident and blamed it on reckless driving after one vehicle tried to overtake three others . He said he could not establish the exact cause of the accident but most likely it could have been reckless driving. He attributed the fatal accident partly to the narrowness of the road with a sudden sharp corner that has become a recognized danger spot.
