Panic as Mbarara Municipal Council Moves to Reclaim Wetland

Environment
Tension is high among the developers of Andrews’s wetlands in Mbarara town as Mbarara municipal council moves to demolish 50 illegal structures built there.
Tension is high in Kamukuzi division in Mbarara Municipality over threats by the authorities to demolish houses found in a swamp in Andrew Cell. Recently, Mbarara Municipality applied for a court order to allow its law enforcement team to demolish all structures in the swamp. Paul Omoko, the town clerk Mbarara Municipality says about 50 houses face demolition.

He accuses the developers of secretly erecting structures in the swamp under the cover of darkness. Omoko says the swamp acts as a major water catchment area in the municipality. He dismisses claims by the developers that they secured approval from the environmental officer and council to fill up the swamp and reclaim it for development.

Cue out…refrain from entering into the swamp//

He is worried that unless the developers are stopped immediately, Mbarara municipality may start experiencing floods just like the case is in Kampala City.

//Cue in: “We are looking for so many Years…
Cue out…. are clearly demarcated and reserved.//

But, the proposal by Mbarara Municipal council to demolish the structures in the swamp has sent developers into panic. Pastor Willy Tumwine of the Holy Spirit church, who was found filling the swamp last week is worried of losing the only structure they use for worshipping.

Wilberforce Byabazaire, the administrator of Holy Spirit church says that they will find a way of saving their church from demolition. He explains that they have been using the church to congregate each day. Saadi Lubega, the LC I chairman Andrew Cell admits that the residents have reclaimed the swamp.

He however says that they have left at least 60 feet to enable council to construct the malaria channel.
