Cecafa Insists Uganda Will Host Senior Challenge Cup

The Secretary General of the Council for East and Central African Football Associations (Cecafa), Nicholas Musonye has insisted that the 2012 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup will be held in Uganda and not Kenya.

On Thursday, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) issued a statement indicating that sponsors East African Breweries Limited (EABL) were happy with the event being held in Kenya but Musonye rubbished the claims.

In a statement issued on Friday, Musonye said that Uganda will host this year’s Cecafa as communicated before.

The last two editions in 2010 and 2011 were held in Tanzania while the 2009 edition took place in Kenya. But the tournament in Nairobi suffered a poor fans turnout in the stadium.

Meanwhile, the FUFA spokesman Rogers Mulindwa has said they have written to the Government through the National Council of Sports (NCS) seeking political permission to host the tournament. Mulindwa reasoned that a tournament of that magnitude where twelve nations convene in one country needs government clearance.

Edgar Watson, the Federation Chief Executive Officer, said FUFA had the will and that the government officials contacted verbally had also sounded supportive of the move. Uganda Cranes are the defending champions of Cecafa-Tusker Senior Challenge Cup after beating Rwanda last year.
