A suspected robber in Kalyankonko village, Maanyi sub-county, Mityana got more than he bargained for after breaking into a resident’s house on Thursday, 16th. The armed robber was disarmed, hacked and his body later burnt by his intended victim, with the help of neighbours.

The robber, only identified as Stuart, broke into Vincent Kibirige’s house at 4am armed with a panga and hammer. Kibirige narrated to neighbours that the robber threatened to kill him unless he surrendered all the money he had in his house.

Kibirige however turned tables on the robber when he jumped him unawares and the two started struggling. Kibirige then managed to disarm the robber and cut him several times with the panga the robber had while raising an alarm.

It could not be easily established whether the robber was killed by the angry residents or simply bled to death. His body was later set upon the residents and burnt before Police could get to the scene.

Police, who showed in the morning, managed to collect the remains and transfer them to Mityana Hospital Mortuary.

Samuel Kamoga, a resident, said that residents were fed up of the insecurity and had resorted to mob justice for any suspected robbers.
Another resident who preferred to remain anonymous said that they had pleaded with Police in vain to increase night patrols in the area.

The police spokesperson of Central-Western Uganda Phillip Mukasa confirmed the incident but said that police is hunting for residents who burnt the dead body and is investigating the incident to see whether they can charge Vincent Kibirige for murder.

This was second incident within a week. On Sunday night a suspected robber Richard Matovu was killed by Wilson Ssemugga and his wife Teopista Nakacwa, a resident of Kajoji village, in Maanyi sub-county, when he attacked and attempted to rob them.
