Over 1500 Muslims in Jinja have shunned consuming rice given to them by their area Member of Parliament.
The Muslims at Masgid Mecca Mosque located in Masese village in Jinja district, say Paul Mwiru, Jinja East Member of Parliament, gave them 50 kilograms of rice which cannot be divided amongst their families for Idd el fitr celebrations on Sunday.
Abdullah Hakim Bengo, one of the Muslims, says it is not good to divide Muslims on Idd day by giving them few kilograms of rice which will cause disagreement among those who get the rice and those who miss out.
Abdul Nuru Mutale, the Imam at Masgid Mecca Mosque, says the Muslims meant to share the rice come from Masese, Kisima One and Two, as well as Lwabitooke villages. They have decided to return the 50 kilograms of rice to Mwiru’s office located on Nizam road west in Jinja.
Musa Nkendembi, one of the supporters of Mwiru, says the Muslims should have accepted the little given to them in good faith and shared it, as many people are donating to the mosque during the Idd.
Mwiru told URN on phone that the rice was meant for Daaku on the eve of Idd el Fitr. He says another special package for Idd is on the way and the Muslims should welcome it in good faith.
