Lugazi Rovers Baseball team failed to make it to the next stage at the on-going 2012 Little League Baseball Series in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania in the US.
After losing the first game to Panama on Saturday, the Lugazi side early on Sunday lost to Mexico 12-0 in an elimination encounter. Team manager Paul Kateregga told Uganda Radio Network that although they were out of contention, the experience has been great and will surely open doors for Ugandan Baseball.
The Lugazi Rovers will now have to play one consolation game before sitting back and enjoying the rest of the Series. This was Uganda’s first time at the Little League World Baseball Series. They will be in the US for three weeks, get to visit a minor league baseball game in New Jersey, according to American website, examiner.com.
In the other elimination games played on Sunday morning, Caribbean (Curacao) stopped Germany (Europe), while Connecticut beat Nebraska 12-0. In the other game New Jersey (Mid Atlantic) humbled Oregon (North West) 10-4.
The annual Little League World Series event brings tens of thousands of families, fans, and players from around the world to watch 10 days of games. The final championship game will be played on Sunday, August 26.
Lugazi Rovers became the first African team to participate in the Little League World Series in over six decades. Last year another Ugandan side qualified for the event, but missed out after the US Embassy denied them visas for what they called discrepancy in their documentation.
