Thirty mourners were seriously injured after a Fuso lorry they were moving in failed to climb a hill and overturned at Musongola village, two kilometers along the Bugiri-Namayingo road.
The incident occurred on Sunday as the Fuso lorry which was carrying mourners from Buyobya village, Namutumba district overturned near Bugiri district headquarters.
According to an eyewitness, Bruhan Madowa, the driver of the lorry registration number UAF 118Q jumped out and took off after realizing that the vehicle had failed to climb the hill.
Dr. George Oundo, Bugiri hospital director, says the injured are currently admitted at Bugiri main hospital with broken limbs and deep cuts on their heads.
Some of the injured people sustained deep cuts in the process of attempting to jump off the vehicle after realizing it was going to overturn.
The officer in charge traffic at Bugiri central police station, Doreen Achiro, said police is hunting for the driver of the lorry to answer charges of causing grievous harm to its passengers besides driving a vehicle in dangerous mechanical condition.
