William Mukirane, Kyazanga Police Station in-charge, has been expelled from Lwengo district by Grace Kaboyo, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC).
Inspector of Police (IP) Mukirane has also been suspended from active duty by Simon Peter Wafana, the southern region Police commander. He has been replaced by Edward Mulera, the district Criminal Investigations Officer.
Mukirane’s expulsion from Lwengo occurred on Sunday, August 26. It came close on the heels of a security meeting called by RDC Grace Kaboyo and attended by residents on the same day.
Kaboyo announced Mukirane’s expulsion following repeated complaints from residents to her office. The residents accused the Kyazanga Police boss of corruption, mishandling of filed complaints, and colluding with known criminals.
Kaboyo said that she had received reports that Mukirane connived with criminals and even went as far as getting a share of almost everything stolen in the area.
Aisha Kyomuhangi, a Kyazanga resident who attended the meeting, confessed that she had long given up reporting cases to Kyazanga Police because filed complaints got nowhere on account of the rampant corruption there.
She claimed that the Police’s first interest was extracting money from complainants. She said that officers at the station even demanded for money to grant Police bond which is supposed to be free.
Alfred Behora, Kyazanga sub--county chairperson, welcomed Mukirane’s expulsion and hoped it would serve as a warning to other Police officers that such behaviour would not be tolerated.
Simon Peter Wafana, the southern region Police head, announced Mukirane’s suspension after news of his expulsion was communicated to him. He said that he had instructed the Police Standards Unit to open a general inquiry file and investigate the alleged misconduct of Mukirane.
