Government has imposed a temporary ban on the registration of new private security companies in the country.
The Internal Affairs Minister, Ruhakana Rugunda, told Parliament today that the ban follows concerns about increasing incidences of crime in the country. He said his ministry has received reports linking the high crime rate to private security companies, which allegedly rent guns to known criminals.
Rugunda said government is going to re-examine the regulations governing the management, recruitment and control of arms by security companies. He warned that government will not hesitate to de-register any security organization found to have links to criminal activity.
Six security companies have so far been de-registered by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. They are Delta Force, Krone Uganda Limited, Nis Uganda Limited, Paragon Uganda Limited, Marshals Uganda Limited and Rhino Security Company.
