The death of the 58 year old legislator comes hardly a month after that of Buhweju Woman MP, Joy Arinaitwe Kariisa. The 27 year old Kariisa died on September 4 after a long illness.
Matovu was elected into Parliament in February 2011 on the National Resistance Movement ticket, ousting the then incumbent Nathan Byanyima. He becomes the 5th MP in the 9th Parliament to die.
The other legislators who have passed on in the last one year include Usuk MP Michael Oromait on July 21, 2012 and Cerinah Nebanda, the Butaleja woman MP who died on December 14, 2012. Oromait was replaced by his daughter Proscovia Alengot, while Nebanda’s sister Florence Andiru replaced her as Butaleja MP. Others include Dr Stephen Mallinga, the then Relief and Disaster Preparedness minister who died in April 2013, and Deputy Prime Minister Eriya Kategaya who died on March 2, 2013. Dr Mallinga was replaced as Butebo County MP by longtime political rival, Dr Patrick Mutono. Kategaya was an ex-officio in Parliament, having retired from elective politics in 2001.
