Patrick Etolu, the former national high jump champion is dead. 78-year-old Etolu succumbed to multiple illnesses at Mulago national referral hospital at 9:30pm on Christmas Eve. His son Paul Okello told URN on Christmas that his father was admitted at Mulago hospital on December 23rd with breathing difficulties and swollen legs.

He explains that the late national high jump champion has been battling heart problems for a long time.  In August this year, Etolu was admitted at Soroti regional referral hospital after he suffered a cardiac arrest at his home in Asinge village in Soroti Municipality. He was discharged after he showed signs of improvement.

Patrick Etolu, the youngest son of the late Etolu says the death of his father has devastated their family. The 78-year-old Patrick Etolu was part of the maiden team that represented Uganda in the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia.  Etolu held the national High Jump record of 1.96 meters from the mid 1950's until 1999. Etolu, has been the only surviving member of Uganda’s maiden team that traveled to the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia.

He is survived by a widow, six children and unspecified number of grand children. By the time of filing this story his body was still lying at Mulago hospital mortuary.
