Filthy Landing Sites Closed

Health
Health authorities in Kalangala district have closed down two landing sites for poor sanitation.

The District Health Inspector, Edward Bujimbi, says that Kisaba and Kitobo landing sites were closed during an operation named keep landing sites clean.

Bujimbi says that the conditions at the two landing site were appalling and a threat to the health of the people. He says that there were very few pit latrines, despite the fact that the landing sites were highly populated by fishermen flocking in from as far as Tanzania.

Bujimbi says that the two landing sites will remain closed until the sanitation is improved.

Meanwhile the District Fisheries office has also imposed a ban on fishing activities until the hygiene standards are improved.

Uganda lost millions of dollars in 1999 when the European Union slapped a ban on the country's fish due to poor hygiene at landing sites
