The UPDF 5th Division court martial in Lira district has convicted seven soldiers for the killing of 10 people at Ogwete Internally Displaced People's Camp last month.
The Court Martial chaired by the 5th Division Administrative Officer, Captain Richard Okwakol, found the soldiers guilty of careless shooting and neglect of duty.
The conviction was based on evidence that the soldiers did not stop Peter Okullo, a rouge officer of the Amuka Militia, from shooting into a crowd of people, killing 10 and wounding 28 others. Court also heard that the UPDF soldiers also shot into the crowd, wounding some civilians.
The head of the military unit deployed at Ogwete Camp, Sergeant Benson Opio, was among those convicted. He pleaded guilty to neglect of duty and was sent to jail.
Captain Okwakol said all the convicted officers will be dishonorably dismissed from the army after serving their jail sentences.
