Apac Has Highest Malaria Rate in the World

Health
Malaria researchers say Apac district has the highest malaria incidence in the world.

Apac, which has traditionally suffered extremely high malaria rates, has seen an increase in cases in the past several years.

Dr. Jessie Stone,a malaria researcher, says the malaria transmission rate in Apac is over 250 times worse than in Kampala.

Stone says malaria endemic zones, such as Apac district, need more government support to tackle the malaria crisis.

Researchers estimate that 320 people die of malaria every day in Uganda, although the number varies from region to region.

Stone says a combination of drugs, bed netting and indoor residual spraying are needed to combat the disease in Uganda. She warns that malaria rates will continue to rise, if the government and the international community do not provide adequate funding for malaria programs.
