Two weeks after it postponed the implementation of its new fees, a proposal by the Mulago Hospital administration to increase the medical charges at its private wing has been rejected by Government.
According to the Mulago Hospital proposal, consultation fees would increase from 5,000 to 20,000 shillings and dental surgery would increase from 50,000 to 120,000 shillings. The cost of giving birth in Mulago was to triple from 40,000 shillings to 150,000 shillings.
However Government says the increment is unacceptable.
State Minister for Primary Health, Richard Nduhuura, says the new fees are too high for ordinary Uganda and are not competitive at all. He says Government has asked the Mulago Hospital administration to revise their proposal in view of the economy, the facilities at the hospital and the fees charged by other hospitals in the country.

The amended rates will be discussed this week by the Ministry of Health and Mulago Hospital before they are announced to the public.
