Some members of the Muslim community in Mbale have threatened to stage mass demonstrations to protest against calls for Sheik Shaban Mubajje to resign from office.
A committee probing the mismanagement of Muslim properties has recommended in its report that Mubajje and his deputy, Sheikh Twaib Mukuye be removed from office for mishandling the affairs of the Muslim Supreme Council. They also called for the removal of the Supreme Council vice chairperson, Hassan Bassajjabalaba.
In the report released yesterday, the committee stated that Mubajje was no longer fit to head the Supreme Council. It said his removal from office would pave way for the much needed unity in the Muslim community.
However the Mbale district Khadi, Issa Masaba, has dismissed the recommendations as baseless. He argued that the power to remove the Mufti from office lies with the General Assembly and not with a committee.
Masaba has vowed to mobilize Muslims in eastern Uganda to protest the committee's decision.
