Court Orders Byanyima, Sabiiti to Disclose Source of Bribery Allegations

News
The High Court in Kampala, has ordered two opposition leaders, Winnie Byanyima and Jack Sabiiti, to disclose to court the source of their information regarding bribery claims made against the Deputy Chief Justice, Leticia Kikonyogo and Justice Remmy Kasule.

Winnie Byanyima, former Mbarara Municipality MP, and the former Rukiga County MP Jack Sabiiti, are charged with libel and giving false information to a person employed in a public office. The accusations stem from a letter they wrote to the Chief Justice in December last year asking him to investigate bribery allegations against the two judges.

In the letter, the opposition politicians claimed that High Court judge, Remmy Kasule, was offered 200 million shillings to deny bail to the Forum for Democratic Change leader, Kizza Besigye. The letter also allegedd that the Deputy Chief Justice, Leticia Kikonyogo, received 200 million shillings to influence her ruling in a case in which Besigye was challenging his dual trial for treason and terrorism in the General Court Martial and in the High Court.

The two judges sued the two politicians for defamation and asked court to order them to disclose their source of information.

Today, High Court judge, Akiiki Kiiza, said that the two politicians must disclose their source. He said the rules of civil procedure indicate that the defendant and plaintiff give the names of their witnesses in their written statement of defence.

Justice Kiiza gave Byanyima and Sabiiti 14 days within which to disclose their source of information.
