The headquarters of the Uganda Police Force is expected to vacate Kibuli Police Training School before the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Kampala next year.
Acting Assistant Inspector General of Police, Chris Opio, says the headquarters is moving to give room for intensive training in preparation of the Commonwealth meeting. He says the police administration is considering relocating to several prime properties in Kampala, including the former offices of British High Commission located on Parliament Avenue.
No deal on that particular property has been reached as yet.
The police headquarters moved from Crested Towers to Kibuli Training School five years ago, on the orders of the former Inspector General of Police, Katumba Wamala. Wamala's directive was aimed at saving millions of shillings that the police force was spending on rent every month. He intended to use the money to build new headquarters for the police.
However the goal was not realized, despite the fact that the police force has a lot of land on which to build its own premises.
During a meeting of the Police Council last week, senior police authorities agreed to explore possibility of trading their land in Nsambya and Kibuli to a core investor who would build them headquarters in Naguru and accommodation in Nagalama, off the Mukono-Kayunga Road.
