Six students arrested over Makerere University riots

News
Six students were yesterday arrested in connection with the riots that broke out yesterday morning at Makerere University.

According to police spokesperson Asuman Mugenyi, the 6 students are being held at wandegeya police station.

The rioting broke out shortly after the Makerere University student duild declared a strike to protest the increase of fees for courses that are to be repeated.

The repeated courses, commonly known as retakes, are an opportunity for students to redo courses and exams that they have failed.

A recent decision by the University Council increased the retake fees from about 6,000 shillings to over 150,000 shillings in some courses.

The students complain that a decision to increase the retake fees was done arbitrarily and without proper consultation.
