President Yoweri Museveni has summoned striking Makerere University lectures for a meeting at State House, Nakasero.
The chairperson of the Makerere University Academic Staff Association, Augustus Nuwagaba, confirmed that the meeting with the President is taking place this afternoon.
Museveni is expected to discuss a stalemate between the Makerere University Academic Staff Association and Government over the delayed salary increment for the university lecturers.
The lecturers went on strike on Friday protesting government's failure to increase their salaries despite promising the raises in 2004. The lecturers are also protesting the alleged preferential treatment given to science subject lecturers complaining that they receive substantially higher salaries than their colleagues.
The lecturers want the salaries to be based on qualifications and regularized across the board.
Nuwagaba said government's failure to honor its promise is a breach of trust. He said the staff are not ready to continue teaching unless a comprehensive agreement is reached regarding their salary increments.
