The Uganda Debt Network (UDN), a civil society organization wants government to set up an independent commission, which will be responsible for determining of Members of Parliament emoluments
During a meeting with the Speaker of Parliament Edward Kiwanuka Sekandi, UDN officials led by the executive director, Fred Opio, asked the speaker to repeal article 85 clauses 1 of the 1995 Constitution, which empowers MPs to determine their own emoluments.
Opio said that if repealed scenarios of conflict of interest in determining their own emoluments.
But Ssekandi defended the emoluments and said parliament has always considered the plight of the people before determining their own payments.
