The Mbale Municipal council Chief Finance Officer, Simon Watti, is in trouble over his alleged sexual encounters with female interns.
During a heated debate on Tuesday afternoon, the council heard that Watti has been sexually exploiting three girls, currently on industrial training with Mbale Municipal council.
The matter was brought to council by three parents. The parents allege that Watti has been forcing the girls into sex, after promising them jobs.
Enraged by the report, the councilors unanimously moved a motion suspending Watti from office, pending an investigation into the reports.
But the council speaker, Abdullah Kutosi, said the suspension was baseless until full investigations have been carried out into the matter. He has ordered the district clerk, Mackay Opolot, to investigate the matter and report his findings to council on January 10th 2007.
Meanwhile the councillors also want the Municipal Engineer, Edward Wadeya, interdicted for incompetence. The councillors have accused Wadeya of approving construction of illegal structures in Town without consulting the council.
In other news, Mbale Municipal council has passed a resolution banning councilors from airing their views on local radio talk shows.
According to the speaker, any councilor who wishes to appear on a radio talk show, must seek permission from either the mayor or the town clerk.
But some councillors have described the ban as unfair. They argue that the ban is in total violation of their constitutional right to freedom of speech.
