Witness Pins Suspect over Child Theft

News
A witness in a child theft case at Buganda Road Court has pinned a woman for the theft of a 3-month-old Baby.
Ruth Nakyeyune, a resident of Nsambya told court presided over by Stella Amabirisi, that she at one time unknowingly assisted Josephine Naziwa, a suspected child thief to steal a child from a couple.
Josephine Naziwa is standing trial for stealing a 3-months-old baby from its mother. She is alleged to have committed the offence in March last year.
In her testimony, Nakyeyune said that Naziwa and the child's mother Masitula Nanyonga were attending prayers at Christian Faith Centre in Nsambya, prior to the ill-fated incident.
She said that during the prayers, Nanyonga excused herself and left church to find her baby at home. Shortly after her departure, Naziwa asked Nakyeyune to take her to Masitula's home, under the pretext that she had promised her a job and needed to discuss with her the details.
Unknown to her that Naziwa was a child thief, Nakyeyune led her to Masitula's home in Nsambya.
The baby's mother says during their conversation, Naziwa offered to get her a job as a shop attendant at one of her brother's shops in either Nakasero or Bombo.
The suspect then offered to carry the baby as the two rode on boda boda motorcycles to meet Nanyonga's prospective employer in Nakasero, a downtown business centre. She says after they arrived at one of the crowded shopping malls the suspect excused herself to go and pick the keys to the shop. Nanyonga says she got suspicious after Naziwa took long to return and that is the last she saw of her baby.
Police investigations later revealed that Naziwa had earlier on attempted to grab a child from a worshiper at Resurrection Church in Nsambya, but her plan was foiled after a suspicious mother sounded an alarm.
Naziwa was arrested last year after she again attempted to grab a baby from a worshipper at another church in Nsambya. She however denies all the allegations.
The State Prosecutor, Emmanuel Ojiambo, says he intends to produce several witnesses including a Nakasero shoe shiner who saw Naziwa fleeing with the baby, to prove his case.
