The Bernard Van Lee Foundation, a Netherlands based NGO has donated 350 million shillings to orphans in Rakai District. The money has been channeled through Orphans Community Based Organisation in Rakai.
John Lugayi, manager of the Orphans Community Based Organization, says the money will be used to construct homes for more than 30,000 orphans in the district. The homes will be constructed in Kyotera town.
Lugayi says some of the money will be used to provide basic necessities like feeding, clothing and education to the orphans.
Rakai has one of the biggest orphan populations in Uganda, resulting from the AIDS pandemic that which wiped out about half of the adult population in the district in the 1980s and early 1990s. The district chairperson, Vincent Ssemakula, says there are about 50,000 AIDS orphans in Rakai.
