Police at Entebbe international Airport have arrested eight suspected conmen.
The suspects were arrested today morning, during an operation to crack down suspected criminal rackets at the airport.
The Airport Police Commandant, Herman Owomugisha, says the operation followed complaints by people, that a group of people was conning people of their money, under the pretext that they would help them clear their goods.
The suspects have been identified as William Kavarwa, Sarah Namwanje, Peter Galiwango, Edward Matsiko, Nickson Nateisha, Patrick Isingiro, Anthony Muhumuza, and William Sekatawa.
Owomugisha says the suspects have on several occasions demanded money from unsuspecting members of the public, as a clearance fee for the goods received on their behalf. After getting the money the conmen would disappear into the airport buildings leaving the people stranded.
Owomugisha says the suspects were found with airport access passes. He does not rule out the possibility that the suspects could be former workers of clearing firms which were de-registered when URA took over the clearance of goods at the Airport.
