The vice chancellor of Kabale University Prof. Jay Kwesiga has asked government to come up with policies to protect girls who conceive while in school. Kwesiga says both the government and Civil society organizations should join hands with the community to address problems affecting the girl child. While speaking to the press, Kwesiga urged government to start awareness campaigns to sensitive the community against condemning young girls who conceive in school. She says girls who conceive accidentally should be supported to complete their studies after delivery. She made the remarks shortly after the completion of a training workshop on gender equality advocacy and empowerment. The training was attended by 50 gender women rights activists, leaders and representatives of disabled women in Kabale. Participants at the training had earlier noted that women rights are greatly violated in southwestern Uganda. They cited the denial of women access to land, increased violence, murder and discrimination of women by male counterparts.
