Construction of the Gulu-Atiak Highway commences in August this year, Uganda National Roads Authority has revealed.
 
Dan Alinange, head of Corporate Affairs Uganda National Roads Authority says that, they have received shillings 200 billion from World Bank and the government of Japan to tarmac the 104 Kilometer road.

 
Alinange says that UNRA received US $ 100 million early this year for the road construction works by they are still awaiting for the completion of the tendering process. Gulu Atiak is currently dilapidated. The news of tarmaking the busy road has been welcomed by operators of commercial transport in the region.
 
Simon Amajuru, the corporate affairs manager Zawadi bus services says that tarmacking the Gulu- Atiak road will reduce their costs of operation, time and improve competition.


Currently buses playing the road spend about 2 hours traveling between Atiak and Gulu because of the poor state of the road. The transport fare from Moyo-Kampala about 400km is sh30, 000 while Arua-Kampala which is over 500km is sh28, 000.
