Kole district LC5 chairman, Peter Ocen Akalo has turned his official vehicle, a Double Cabin Pickup, into an ambulance to help ferry patients including pregnant mothers having delivery complications and have been referred.

This is the only vehicle which was given to Kole district, when it was curved from Apac district last year.

Ocen said much as the district has only one official vehicle, he has surrendered it to help ferry patients who have been referred to Lira referral hospital since the district has no ambulance.

Ocen says he is only asking the locals, who want to use his official vehicle to fuel it since doesn’t have the money to fuel it himself.

Francis Oluka, Kole district chief administrative officer says they cannot afford to purchase any vehicle at the moment since the district’s revenue collection is very low. Oluka explains that the district is currently operating with only one official double cabin pickup, which was given from the mother district of Apac.

He appeals to the central government to consider providing the district with more vehicles especially to help them properly monitor government projects in the area.

Andrew Ayoo, the officer in charge Akalo health Center III told our reporter on Wednesday that many patients who are always referred in critical conditions end up either staying at home or dying since most of them do not have capacity to hire vehicles to transport them.

Last week, a pregnant mother died at Anyoo village, Bala Sub County after failing to be transported to Lira regional referral hospital.
