Suspected drug dealers at Nyendo, a Masaka town suburb have stoned a police officer to death and injured two others.

The deceased policeman has been identified as Mohammad Meera, 27, a Police Constable (PC) No.56366 attached to Masaka central police station. The injured are Musa Wabyona and another one only identified as Kawa, who have been taken to hospital for treatment.

The incident in which a police man was killed occurred at around 11pm, at Kasaana Zone in Nyendo Ssenyange Division in Masaka Municipality. The deceased and eight other armed police officers were on foot patrol in the area when they were suddenly ambushed by suspected drug dealers. In the process they hurled a huge stone at the policemen on duty which landed on Meera’s head shattering his skull.

Police sources suspect that it was drug dealers who attacked the policemen because they stay in that particular area.

Masaka District Police Commander Geoffrey Kahebwa says the drug dealers could have been tipped off by some one that police officers were patrolling the area before laying ambush in which Meera was killed.

He says Meera was pronounced dead a few minutes after reaching Masaka Referral Hospital where he had been rushed for treatment.

Kahebwa has vowed to hunt for the suspects and bring them to justice.

The incident comes barely two weeks after a group of unindentified robbers attacked Dawson Petrol Station in Nyendo and killed two people before taking off with a rifle and 1.6 million shillings. The deceased were identified as Abdallah Anguzu, a Security Guard attached to New Securiko Uganda Company and Abdukarim  Bampiga, a fuel pump attendant.

Meera, who hails from Butarejja district, was passed out at Kabalye Police training school at in Masindi district on  1st April 2013. He had just spent two months in Masaka after being deployed there on April 19.

In March 2012, Inspector of Police John Michael Ariong was stoned to death during riots in Kampala.
