A 10-year-old boy in Idhogolo village in Mafubira sub county Jinja district has attempted suicide citing torture by his parents. Ibrahim Saku, a pupil at Namulesa Muslim primary school took poison on Monday to end his life after he was tortured by his parents. It all started after Saida Lowe and Moses Nkwanga, the parents to Saku allegedly tied him and beat him up allegedly for refusing to go to school.

They also reportedly denied him food for several days. Shortly after he was released by his parents, Aziza Kyozira, a neighbor family advised the minor to report his parents to the sub county for alleged mistreatment.  Before heading to the sub county Saku bought poison at shillings 200 and took it in an attempt to end his life. Shortly after arriving at the sub county headquarters Saku was rushed to Jinja Referral Hospital by Hamisi Kiganira, the Mafubira LC 3 chairperson for emergency treatment.

Before he was admitted Saku said his parents had ganged up to beat him while accusing him of stealing a mobile phone, a charge he vehemently denied. Kiganira immediately launched a hunt for the parents of the minor, who are still in hiding. He expressed concern about the increased cases of child neglect and abuse in his sub county.

But Moses Nkwanga says that his step son had become unruly at home stealing money and not doing home work. Samson Lubega, the Busoga Regional police spokesperson says both parents will be charged with child neglect and administering corporal punishments to a minor, which is illegal.
